Two weeks ago, I went to New York and saw the “Abstract Expressionist America” exhibit at the MOMA. I’m primarily engaging with abstraction lately, so the exhibit was a great source of inspiration. In particular, the paintings of Arshile Gorky, Barnett Newman, Bradley Walker Tomlin, Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, William de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Joan Miitchell, Hans Hoffman, Ad Reinhardt, Helen Frankenthaler were of my favorites. Seeing the paintings in real life was an amazing experience. Up close and personal, I could see every physical mark, stroke, detail, and love that the artists put forth. During the short period of time I stood in front each artwork, I tried to image what type of life the artists lived – what state of mind they were in when creating the piece, and it made me question – how does one depict their inner most selves, inner most worlds onto the foreign canvas?
