more than a photo, but not quite a video

Lately, I like nothing more than staring at strange GIFs to placate my curiosity. And they don’t come much stranger than this collection from artist Spanish artist Francoise Gamma, AKA Videogramo, whose GIFs and stills images are obsessed with the faded look of 1980s cyberpunk classics.

I’ve only selected a few of his wonderfully weird autonomous forms to post here, in a collection where things seem to stretch and slide about, mutating into bizarre creatures that have a transhuman futurist look to them, where bodies do things they shouldn’t and the results are like some twisted experiments from a horror film. There’s something very sci-fi, ghoulish and unsettling about them, while also being quite addictive and soothing to look at. Take a look at some of his captivating animations below and you can find the rest on his sprawling, disorienting web site, which isn’t really a web site as much as a curated online gallery.
