Book sculptures

Attempting to blur the line between objects, sculpture, and photography, Cara Barer manipulates discarded books into strange origami like sculptures by changing their hardbound appearances. She photographs the objects in a state of flux and arrives at her final images through chance and experimentation.

Her process begins with soaking the books for a few hours until they have a malleable shape. Then she sculpts a form for each book according to its size, content, and type of paper. Her book sculptures comment on the obsolescence world of libraries in our century today.

Here are some of her work from 2004-2011:

  1. Cool, stunning work — I’ve never seen books in this way! Some remind me of mandalas, others of Rorschach test images. A really creative idea to change books into these various forms. Thanks for sharing these images.

    1. I totally agree about the rorschach images!! When I first came across her work I was blown away, I thought they were dyed fabrics…
