The Whitney Biennial 2012

“One of the best Whitney Biennials in recent memory” recalls the New York Times, I was very fortunate to have seen the exhibition in New York yesterday. The entire museum was filled with amazing back to back paintings, video, film, performance, sculpture, music, jewelry and installations, dispersed among the five floors in relevance to category. I was amazed at how much of a presence painting had in the exhibit. Each floor had its own unique aura, from altered spaces to pops of color, which seemed to produce a peculiar effect on your perception and interaction with the artworks. I was particularly excited to see Nicole Eisenman’s wonderful works on paper as well as Werner Herzog’s powerful yet extremely emotive five channel installation projection among a few others.

After the biennial, I went on to see the Albert Oehlen show at the Gagosian Gallery, whose large-scale abstract paintings were also extremely inspirational and such a joy to look at. So in its totality, I was very satisfied with my short-lived day trip to New York, even though the actual trip to and from is a dueling 8 hour bus ride, I felt I had reaped the inspirational jolt I needed to produce my current work.

  1. As the partner of an artsit I have come to learn to love contemporary art, which I must confess I sometimes find ever so slightly intimidating…I wonder if they do that on purpose?! The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra where I live is currently hosting masterpieces from the Musee d’Orsay..I’ll be off to visit soon if the crowds ever die down (which I seriously doubt!) Love your blog.

  2. Great shots! Thanks for letting us tag along on your pilgrimage.
