I know many people who are considered fashionable or stylish, and it seems that a lot of people think that the two words are interchangeable. Here and now, let me make obvious that the two words do not mean the same thing.
“Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” Coco Chanel
She knows what she’s talking about. Being fashionable is a matter of knowing what is trendy and cool, knowing what is popular now, and in my opinion, buying into the billion-dollar marketing industry’s efforts. Knowing what you look good in, what colors suit you and go together, what shapes and textures are most flattering are a completely different matter. Those things are a matter of style. Being able to communicate to the outside world what your personality is like through the clothes that you wear does not require a person to know what the most popular thing on the latest fashion week was.
Something important that I don’t think everyone understands is this distinction. Being distinctly fashionable and being distinctly stylish are two different things. That being said, a person can be both fashionable and stylish. Through the things that are current and popular, one can choose pieces that make them look good and uphold their personality.
Personally I think that being stylish is the more important thing, as it not only promotes self-expression and individuality, but it is generally cheaper. While it is possible to be fashionable on a budget, I personally prefer emulating my own style, as it requires much less shopping, and a lot more thinking outside-the-box. Choose whatever path you like, but I would advise that you wear only what you like, while staying comfortable at the same time.
